Membership and Industry Groups
The SMF, through its Membership and Industry Groups (MEMIG), engages its members via its 10 industry groups (IG) through a myriad of initiatives and activities such as seminars, networking events and dialogue sessions. These activities enhances engagement between members and external parties which includes other federations and government agencies. With constant engagement and outreach, the committee aims to provide members with a conducive platform to network and meet fellow industry peers. OUR INDUSTRY GROUPS Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing (AEM) was rebranded from Metal, Machinery and Engineering (MME) in June 2021 to stay relevant to the world’s trends and align with Singapore’s Manufacturing 2030 vision. The AEM IG organises various activities to enrich, educate and stimulate members’ interest. These activities include enabling members to gain first-hand information on government’s programmes and other information that is beneficial to members’ businesses. New Members’ Welcome The New Members’ Welcome, with support from RHB Singapore, is a monthly networking session held at the SMF building where SMF’s new members are gathered to interact and socialise with fellow business owners. The first session was held in October 2020, with more than 300 company representatives participating across 10 sessions in the past 6 months. The session starts with an introduction to the SMF and sharing of the services the SMF provides to members such as job matching, guidance in grants applications and business to business matching sessions. New members were also encouraged to participate in upcoming activities that would provide them with more value to their membership. The event also featured booths set up by partnering members and Associated Services, allowing them to introduce their services to new members. Lifestyle Industry Group Fireside Chats! Webinar Series The SMF’s Lifestyle Industry Group (LIG) created a webinar series titled “LIG Fireside Chats!”, with the first episode broadcasted in April 2020 on the SMF Youtube channel. Garnering more than 400 views, this three-episode series had experts from SKALE, Singapore Institute of Retail Studies-Nanyang Polytechnic (SIRS-NYP), and LABHaus shared insights to grow businesses through digital transformation. Factory Showcase
Advanced Manufacturing Factory Filming One of the SMF’s initiatives for this financial year was to profile and showcase advanced manufacturing capabilities, processes and the attractive working environment of SMF members. Adopting advanced manufacturing practices help companies drive overall productivity growth and attract talents. To showcase these companies, the SMF organised filming sessions with some of our SMF members, starting with members from the Food & Beverage Industry Group (FBIG), and was launched on the SMF’s YouTube and social media channels. Some of the companies the SMF featured were Baker’s Oven Patisseries, Lim Kee Food Manufacturing and Thong Siek Food Industry, among many others. These companies used to do much of their production manually, but with the implementation of automation and digitalisation, they could upskill their manpower so that they could do more meaningful roles. Launch of Taskforce
The SMF launched a new taskforce – the Singapore COVID-19 Cleaning and Disinfection Industry Taskforce (CDITF) on 25 August 2020. This is an initiative by the SMF Energy and Chemicals (E&C) Industry Group (IG), to establish a platform for the Cleaning, Disinfection and Hygiene industry. The taskforce discusses relevant issues pertaining to the industry, while promoting best practices and innovation to help the industry grow competitively amidst the pandemic. Through collaborations with government agencies and private institutions, the taskforce aims to educate the public on the safety and quality of products for consumers and institutional customers. Since the launch of the CDITF, they have published a Disinfectant Industry Guidance, through collaborations with the National Environment Agency (NEA), with references to overseas standards such as the European Standard - EN 1040 and EN 13697. Singapore Packaging Star Awards 2020 Organised by the SMF’s Packaging Council of Singapore, the Singapore Packaging Star Awards (SPSA) is a prestigious national award that honours companies and students for their innovative and creative packaging designs and material use. The Award has four categories – Commercial Sales & Display, Commercial Environmental Sustainable Packaging, Commercial Transportation & Protection, and Student Sales & Display category. Winners of the Singapore Packaging Star Awards will have the opportunity to gain regional and international acclaim as they will be eligible to represent Singapore in the AsiaStar Awards and WorldStar Awards. SMF Centre for Corporate Learning (CCL)
For over five decades, the SMF has been providing training programmes to the Singapore business community. To enhance our training programmes, the SMF set up the SMF Centre for Corporate Learning (CCL) in 2010. It has since been instrumental in assisting the SMF to meet its mission of helping companies increase their competitiveness by equipping their employees with skillsets and knowledge to perform at optimum levels. With the belief that people are the most important asset of any organisation, and having built a wide range of comprehensive and holistic corporate learning programmes, the SMF CCL now extends its services beyond the manufacturing industries.
