As borders closed and travel restrictions in place to keep the pandemic out, the SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department moved its seminars to the virtual sphere to provide the manufacturing community opportunities to diversify their supply chains. These webinars also provided information such as overseas government policies, free trade agreements, and trade opportunities to enter new markets.

Cross-border Webinars

17 June 2020 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department jointly organised a webinar titled “Indonesia: Next Manufacturing Destination” together with the Singapore Business Federation (SBF). The zoom webinar was held in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore to share the benefits and know-hows of expanding into the Indonesia market.

13 to 14 July 2020 The SMF was invited to give our views at the “FHA Congress 2020” for one of its think tank titled “Response. Recovery and the Road Ahead Post COVID 19”. SMF President Mr Douglas Foo shared how the SMF helped member-companies to recover from the pandemic. He also shared how some of the SMF’s Food and Beverage Industry Group (FB IG) members pivoted or adapted amid this crisis.

23 July 2020 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department, together with the Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore, co-organised a webinar titled “Post Covid Investment Opportunities and Business Incentives in Thailand”. The webinar covered areas such as Digital Economy, Smart City, Healthcare, and many others. More than 160 participants comprising SMF members, representatives from fellow Trade Associations and Chambers (TACs) and foreign chambers attended the webinar.

27 August 2020 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department partnered with ICICI Bank to organise a webinar titled “India Re-imagined – Thoughts in the Post-Covid World”. This informative webinar provided more than 160 participants crucial information such as India Government initiatives to help foreign companies’ expansion to India. Participants also heard from other companies’ success stories in India.

3 September 2020 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department, together with Mexico Embassy to Singapore, the Confederation of Industrial Chambers of Mexico (CONCAMIN), the Secretariat of Economy of Mexico, and Interplex Holdings Pte Ltd, with support from Enterprise Singapore (ESG), organised a webinar titled on “Mexico – The Choice for Building Your Resilient and Robust Global Supply Chains”. More than 170 participants heard from esteemed speakers such as His Excellency Agustin Garcia Lopez Loaeza, Ambassador of Mexico to Singapore how the Mexico Government is supporting foreign companies to invest in the Mexico market.

4 September 2020 Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren) hosted the “2nd General Meeting of the Asia Business Creation (ABC) Platform”, where the SMF is one of the member-countries, representing Singapore on the platform. SMF President Mr Douglas Foo and SMF Council Member Mr Neo Eng Chong shared how the SMF is supporting the manufacturing community during this pandemic.

11 September 2020 The SMF was invited to participate in the Fireside Chat during ITAP’s launch on the topic of “Forging Ahead with Industry 4.0 in the New Normal”. SMF President Mr Douglas Foo gave his views on how the manufacturing community could forge into the new normal with Industry 4.0 technologies.

15 September 2020 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department, together with the Batam Authority, and Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) Singapore Committee organised a webinar session titled “Batam – Industrial Transformation and Its Opportunities”. More than 200 participants heard about the investment opportunities available in Batam.

17 September 2020 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department, together with the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam in Singapore and Viet Nam Ministry of Planning and Investment, organised a webinar titled “Leveraging on Vietnam for your Investments”. This webinar enabled companies to explore Vietnam as a possible destination for diversification and to help companies to seize new business opportunities in Vietnam. More than 300 participants attended this webinar.

21 September 2020 The SMF International Networks and Strategic Development Department and Tuya Smart Inc., a global IoT platform, organised the Southeast Asia Edition of the 2020 AI+IoT Business Conference titled “Revive in Growth – Inspired by Intelligence”. SMF President Mr Douglas Foo shared about harnessing AI+IoT to transform businesses in Singapore in the post-COVID era.

22 September 2020 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department, in partnership with the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and the Malaysia-Singapore Business Council (MSBC), organised a webinar session to discuss and provide an insight into “The New Normal: Opportunities in Industry 4.0 in Malaysia and Singapore”. More than 300 participants gained insights on how they can tap on opportunities in Malaysia’s and Singapore’s Industry 4.0 transformation.

25 September 2020 The SMF was invited to participate in a virtual dialogue organised by the Stratagem Group and NTU Nanyang Centre for Public Administration (NCPA). Titled “How has COVID-19 shaped economic and trade policies in Asia”, SMF President Mr Douglas Foo shared how the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of the global supply chains and that now, businesses must review their supply chains to ensure its resilience against future challenges.

5 November 2020 The SMF was invited to participate in a webinar series “Saudi Arabia G20 Presidency Webinar”, which was organised by the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia. During the session, SMF President Mr Douglas Foo shared how the SMF was assisting companies in adopting technologies to cushion the impact of the pandemic.

20 November 2020 The SMF was invited to participate in the “Lien China Development Forum 2020”, which was organised by the Lien Ying Chow Legacy Fellowship at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE). SMF President Mr Douglas Foo was part of the panel discussion on “Intensifying the Implementation of Innovation Driven Strategies to Boost High Quality Economic Development”.

4 February 2021 The SMF’s International Networks and Strategic Development Department partnered with the High Commission of Canada in Singapore, the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service in Singapore, and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, for a webinar titled “Canada: Your Hub in North America”. The Honorable Mary Ng, Canadian Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion, and International Trade, delivered the keynote speech at the session. More than 250 participants gained insights on investing in the Canada Market.

18 March 2021 The SMF was invited to be one of the speakers for the webinar “RCEP: New Cooperation Opportunity for Singapore and China”, which was organised by the Lien Ying Chow Legacy Fellowship at NTU. During the webinar, SMF President Mr Douglas Foo shared how the upcoming Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) will open more collaboration opportunities between Singapore and China companies

COVID-19 Pivot Transformation Programme

The SMF’s GBG and the International Networks and Strategic Department partnered with industry professionals from various sectors to conduct six exciting and informative webinars, covering a range of interesting topics from how to leverage digital tools to Indonesia’s halal certification, GST reserve charge to fundamental data, business transformation during Covid and internationalisation frameworks. In total, more than 1,000 participants attended the webinars.
